Since 1992, the President's Council has awarded over $3 million for student scholarships and special projects in each of our five schools. President's Council gifts set the pace for philanthropy at our Health Science Center and have contributed more than $2 million to grow the Health Science Center's Endowment Fund, offering perpetual support that is directly impacting the work of outstanding Health Science Center physicians and researchers.
This year, for the first time in the history of the President's Council, we received a matching gift from the Ewing Halsell Foundation for $500,000, allowing us to award a $1 million Endowment — The Ewing Halsell President's Council Distinguished Chair. Dr. John Hart, the recipient of this extraordinary gift, was recognized for excellence in biosciences research. His recent discovery, relating to the proteins found in ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, stand to have an enormous impact globally, contributing important new scientific knowledge that holds great promise in the area of neurodegenerative diseases.
