The President’s Council Chair in Medical Research

The President's Council Endowed Chair was awarded on November 16, 2005 to Dr. Sunil Ahuja. Dr. Ahuja is an internationally recognized physician-scientist who represents the finest in medical research and academic medicine.

 

Dr. Ahuja is a Health Science Center professor of medicine (infectious diseases), microbiology and immunology and directs the Veterans Administration Center for HIV/AIDS Research within the South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie Murphy Division.

 

In the short span of nine years, Dr. Ahuja has brought more than $18 million in research funding to the Health Science Center. His latest honor is the prestigious MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, a designation that goes to fewer than 5 percent of NIH-funded investigators. This most recent designation clearly puts him among the best of the best.

 

Dr. Ahuja joined the Health Science Center from the NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He is an internationally renowned expert in the highly competitive field of infectious diseases and has been published in the world's most prestigious medical and scientific journals.
