President's Council Endowments

For the past several years, President Cigarroa has used the annual gifts to the President's Council to create an endowment that supports an outstanding physician or researcher whose new discovery in patient care are making a difference for citizens of South Texas and the world. President's Council gifts help ensure that the best research scientists, nurses, dentists, allied health professionals and physicians live and work in San Antonio and South Texas.

This year, for the first time in the history of the President's Council, a matching gift from the Ewing Halsell Foundation for $500,000 was received which allowed the President's Council to award a $1 million Endowment—The Ewing Halsell President's Council Distinguished Chair.

Dr. John Hart was the recipient of the fifth endowment from the President's Council and is recognized for Excellence in Biosciences Research. His recent discovery, relating to the proteins found in ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, stands to have an enormous impact globally, contributing important new scientific knowledge that holds great promise in the area of neurodegenerative diseases.
